Dhrupad Ensemble
“There is only one way for the moderns to become great and perhaps unequaled :
by imitating the ancients.”

The Dhrupad Ensemble is a meeting between the internationally renowned Dhrupad singers Gundecha Brothers and their students the Samvad that since many years are studying Dhrupad on their western instruments, the silver flute and the saxophone. The first performance was given in the year 2009 in Mumbai at Tin Prahar festival, and from that moment on the Dhrupad Ensemble has performed all over, from India to U.S, playing at some of the most important indian classical music festivals in India as Saptak, Sawai Gandharva, Doverlane music conference and on many more stages.
The idea to introduce western instruments in the classical Dhrupad performance was born after the Gundecha Brothers started teaching Dhrupad to the Samvad on their western instruments. Those instruments are able to catch fine micro-tonal tuning, and subtle movements of the ragas, and therefore perfectly suitable to dhrupad music. The Dhrupad Ensemble is a new experience of this incredibly old tradition, that is enriched with new flavors and feelings. A double Jugalbandi between gurus and shishyas.
